Biographies of the Financial World.
International Symposium at Stockholm School of Economics
20–21 August, 2010
The Institute for Economic and Business History Research and the Foundation for Economic History Research within Banking and Enterprise, in cooperation with the European Association for Banking and Financial History, hereby invite you to the symposium “Biographies of the Financial World” in Stockholm 20–21 August, 2010. The symposium will be open for about 75 participants with invited speakers representing international finance families, authors of biographies, and other experts in the field.
The focus of the symposium is threefold:
Each part of the focus is related to a set of questions:
Are there any distinguished set of corporate governance principles attached to family capitalism, in the context of banking? To what extent are principles and strategic choices embedded in specific religious or secular movements? Is profit maximization and/or the blood line everything?
A challenge for most family firms is to plan for continuity. How is competence and commitment transferred to the next generation? When are the formative years for young members of the family? How are they selected for a career in the family firm? What is the role of spouses, siblings and cousins and others? What is the incentive structure for non-family members and how is loyalty towards family values communicated and preserved?
What is the nature of the editorial, technical and publishing process for biographies, exhibitions and films concerning family firms? What are the problems for archivists, researchers and translators in dealing with languages, terminology and historical contexts? How do we deal with the bias towards success stories? Are there some conflicts of interest between researchers and representatives of families and archivists?
The symposium is financed by Dr. Econ. Peter Wallenberg’s Foundation for Economics and Technology. The symposium is gratis, however, travel and accommodation costs are at the expense of the participants.
The registration for this event will be available here until 15 July 2010. Please note that the availability is limited.
